Maluhia Kinimaka

Maluhiahaliiokauaiepilialoha Kinimaka (Malu) is a Professional Surfer, Engineer, and Marine Biologist born and raised on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. She first stepped foot on a surfboard as a 6-month old with her legendary big wave surfer father, Titus Kinimaka. Ever since, Malu has felt an innate connection to the water and the wave, and has built a life centered around it.

Malu is now one of the most well-known, next generation Native Hawaiian Surfers, lauded not only for her powerful surfing and adept skill at navigating big waves and daunting barrels, but simultaneously for her unique impact as a Stanford educated Environmental Engineer and Activist. To date, Malu is the first person from her high school, as well as the first and only Professional Surfer, to claim a degree from the prestigious Stanford University.

Upon matriculation, Maluhia will be the first female Professional Surfer to earn a PhD. She plans to create a center for marine research to empower community-based environmental stewardship on her home island of Kaua’i. Malu has already contributed essential research as part of the team that digitally mapped the coral reefs of Cloudbreak in 2022, as well as being a key figure in the 2023 paper, “The Effect of Coral Reef Complexity and Surface Composition on Coral Larval Recruitment”, lending insight into the early stages of coral development.

Malu has been featured in the 2023 hit Amazon Series, “Surf Girls Hawaii” and Surf Girls season 2 on Amazon Prime is already in progress. The upcoming year also holds pumping competitions that take place during the winter on Hawaii’s relentless North Shore.

Striving to be an ever-better water woman in all aspects of her life; from surfing, to research expeditions, to caretaking of our natural world, Malu propels herself and her studies into new heights. Taking her mom’s advice to, “never give up”, and living true to her fathers words, “live with aloha”, she weaves together her surfing, science, and stewardship, eternally seeking to bring balance to the world of water.
